Sage Quick Guide – Abilities, Tips and Tricks for Beginners

The blueprint for the term "Support Agent", Sage is also one of the most recognizable VALORANT characters. Here's a quick guide on using the bastion of China!

Agent Overview

Sage is a great agent for slowing down her opponents and supporting her teammates. Her Healing Orb and Resurrection can bring wounded or fallen teammates back into the mix completely, and swing rounds in her favor. Sage’s Barrier Orb and Slow Orb are great utility for slowing or completely halting a push from the opposition. While these things are great, she sadly falls short in the Sentinel role because she’s in a nerfed state compared to where she used to be, and other Sentinels perform the role better. However, she is still a great pick for some maps, such as Icebox and Split.

Strengths

  • Sage can heal herself and her teammates with her Healing Orb on a 30-second cooldown, bringing them back into the fight.
  • Her Ice Wall can be used to secure a spike site, and offer an object for teammates to plant behind. One of the most common examples of this would be the B Site on Icebox.
  • Sage’s ultimate ability, Resurrection, can be used to bring teammates back to life and swing the advantage in her favor.

Weaknesses

  • Sage’s Ice Wall can be easily destroyed by opponents, especially if they’re coordinated.
  • Ice Wall can be very lackluster on certain maps, limiting how much play she sees on larger maps like Breeze.
  • Sage is the only Sentinel who doesn’t offer utility to cover the flank, meaning that teams who only play one Sentinel will either lack flank support, or have to ditch Sage altogether.

Skill Breakdown

Ability 1 (C) – Barrier Orb

Equip a barrier orb. FIRE places a solid wall. Alt-Fire rotates the targeter 90 degrees. Holding Alt Fire and then moving your mouse allows you to pick specific angles for the wall to be placed at.

Ability 2 (Q) – Slow Orb

Equip a slowing orb. Fire to throw a slowing orb forward that detonates upon landing, creating a lingering field that slows players caught inside of it.

Signature Ability (E) – Healing Orb

Equip a healing orb. Fire with your crosshairs over a damaged ally to activate a heal-over-time on them. Alt-Fire while Sage is damaged to activate a self-heal-over-time. The self-heal only provides 30hp while the ally heal provides 100hp.

Ultimate Ability (X) – Resurrection

Equip an ability that can resurrect your teammates. Fire with your crosshairs placed over a dead ally to begin resurrecting them. After a brief channel, the ally will be brought back to life with full health.

Tips and Tricks

Tip #1 – Ice Climber

Sage’s Ice Wall can be used a bit more creatively than just blocking off an entryway. Sage can use her Ice Wall to boost on to off angles to gain an advantage over her opponents. One example is this mid-wall on Ascent’s mid-arches.

Tip #2 – Baiting the Rez

Sage’s ultimate ability, Resurrection, can be difficult to use safely, especially without her Barrier Orb wall. This is why a common trick Sage players use is called a “Resurrection Bait”. This is when Sage resurrects a teammate and then takes an off-angle to protect them as they get resurrected. The resurrected teammate will often die, but Sage will get a trade kill and find value with her ultimate, which she may not have otherwise. Since Sage’s ultimate is so powerful, it should be used as often as possible, and this tip enables players to find additional use for the ability.
